Know Your Local Firebreak Deadlines and Requirements

If you own land in Perth’s northern suburbs, staying on top of firebreak compliance is essential.
Every local council has slightly different rules about when firebreaks must be installed, how wide they should be, and what materials need to be cleared.

Missing your council’s deadline can mean fines, unexpected contractor costs, or even increased bushfire risk.
Here’s a quick guide to firebreak requirements across Perth’s key northern councils — and how Green Surgery can help keep you compliant this season.

City of Wanneroo Firebreak Rules

Deadline: Firebreaks must be installed by 30 November 2025 and maintained until 31 March 2026.
Requirements:

  • Minimum 3 metres wide and 4 metres high clearance
  • Firebreaks must be constructed inside property boundaries
  • Fuel loads (grass, weeds and leaf litter) must be kept below 5 cm
  • All properties over 2,000 m² require a full perimeter firebreak
